ADMIN NOTIFICATION TO PARENTS 5/2016 26 April 2016 Our Ref: NVPS/102/16 Dear Parents, In this notification, we would like to highlight the various activities that the pupils will be undergoing before Term 2 comes to a close. Please note that Friday, 27 May will be the last school day for Term 2 and the pupils will go for their well-deserved school vacation from Saturday, 28 May to Friday, 24 June. The pupils will return to school on Monday, 27 June 2016. We would like to extend a warm welcome to Ms Ng Pei Feng who has joined NVPS as Vice Principal (Admin) on 1 April 2016.

School Events and Activities for May 2016 Chat Over Breakfast (COB) – Tuesday 3 May 2016 At North View Primary School, we adopt a pro-active approach towards total health ([email protected]) development. We do this by creating opportunities where health promoting activities are encouraged and facilitated. One of the activities that we have been conducting is Chat Over Breakfast where our pupils enjoy a healthy breakfast while interacting with his/her teachers and fellow classmates. The first session of Chat Over Breakfast will be conducted on 3 May during Form Class Period. The themes for COB 2016 will be aligned to 2 of the 5 SEL key domains of Social and Emotional Competencies. Pupils will discuss with their classmates on the type of food that they would like to bring one week before every Chat Over Breakfast session during Form Class Period. The ‘healthy plate’ (Source: Health Promotion Board, Singapore) will be used as a guide during their discussion. P1 to P5 Assessments - Thursday 5 May 2016 to Friday 13 May 2016 (Early Dismissal for P1 to P5 pupils only) Please be reminded of the school hours for:  P1 to P5 pupils - School hours will be from 7.30am to 12.45pm.  P6 pupils - No early dismissal; Schools hours remain as 7.30am to 1.45pm Please make the necessary transport arrangements for your child to be fetched home on the days mentioned. NVPS Family Day – Saturday 14 May 2016 NVPS Family Day, a once in every two years event, is organized to bring all Northviewans and their families together for a time of bonding and fun. The event also provides an opportunity for all to interact and get to know one another better. This year, the event will be held at S.E.A AQUARIUM, RESORT WORLD SENTOSA (RWS) on Saturday, 14 May 2016 from 9 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. Details of Family Day have been given to all parents in a separate note (our ref: NVPS/101/16) distributed on 21 April. K2 Visit – Tuesday 17 May 2016 Our school will be hosting K2 children from various kindergartens on 17 May. This visit is organised annually to present K2 children with a sampling of core experiences that they would undergo in the primary school. Student Leaders will take on the role of NVPS ambassadors as they lead the K2 children through a myriad of interesting and engaging activities. P3 Mother Tongue Languages (MTL) Cultural Camp – Wednesday 18 May 2016 To create an immersive environment for the learning and usage of Mother Tongue Languages, a one-day Mother Tongue Language and Cultural Day Camp will be organized for our Primary 3 Chinese/Malay/Tamil Language pupils on 18 May. It will be a day of fun and learning for the pupils as a series of interesting activities such as Chinese Puppet-making, Rhymes Recitation, Storytelling, Batik Painting, Dikir Barat, Angklung, Kolam, and Thoranam. We hope that through this event our pupils will be motivated to use and speak their Mother Tongue Language more often and confidently in their daily life. P4 Social Studies Field-Based Lessons (FBL) to Maritime Experiential Museum – Wednesday 18 May 2016 to Friday 20 May 2016 The Maritime Experiential Museum allows our children to experience Asia’s rich maritime history and discover Singapore’s past as a trading port. This brings what they learn in Social Studies about our early settlers to life. A separate note with more details of the camp will be sent out to parents at a later date. P2 Spatial Visualisation Programme (SVP) - Wednesday 18 May 2016 to Wednesday 25 May 2016 SVP will commence in Term 2, Weeks 9 and 10 during curriculum hours for the P2 pupils. This is part of the school’s strategic initiative to develop the pupils’ metacognitive thinking. Through a systematic and structured developmental approach, pupils will develop critical and inventive thinking competencies, which are also essential 21st century competencies. P5 and P6 Sexuality Education – Thursday 19 May 2016 to Tuesday 24 May 2016 MOE Sexuality Education (SEd) in schools, delivered through the Growing Years Programme entitled “Curious Minds”, aims to meet pupils’ developmental needs and help them respond to the challenges they may face at the onset of puberty. Our P5 and P6 pupils will be attending the Growing Years Programme during school hours as part of their post-exam activities. They will undergo a series of 4 lessons of 30 minutes each during the period of 19 to 24 May. Details of the Growing Years Programme have been given to all P5 and P6 parents in an earlier note (our ref: NVPS/035/16) distributed on 2 Feb. P1 to P5 Baseline ICT Standards Training - Thursday 19 May 2016 to Wednesday 25 May 2016 The P1 - P3 pupils will continue with their lessons on keyboarding, Microsoft Word processing and Microsoft PowerPoint respectively. The P4 pupils will be learning the different functions of Microsoft Excel such as creating a table, creating a chart, inserting formulas etc. to equip them with basic computing skills. The P5 pupils will learn basic computer programming as they undergo training in the creation of educational games. Understanding programming, or otherwise known as coding, concepts, improves problem-solving and thinking skills which are both transferable and empowering. P4 VIA Community Outreach Programme – Thursday 19 May 2016 to Wednesday 25 May 2016 Our P4 pupils will be visiting two old folks’ homes in for a VIA community outreach programme called “Creating Art Together”. This is a collaboration between the CCE department and the Aesthetics department. The two homes which are partnering with our school for the programme are Sunshine Welfare Action Mission (SWAMI) and Sree Narayana Mission Home for the Aged Sick. The P4 pupils will be doing artwork together with the elderly at the homes and selected artworks will be exhibited first at our school before moving them to the Yishun Community Library to share with the larger local community. Through this, we hope our pupils will learn the aesthetic outcomes for the art exhibition, but more importantly, learn values such as respect, care, empathy and sincerity through the experience of art-making with the elderly. P4 Robotics Programme – Thursday 19 May 2016 to Wednesday 25 May 2016 We have made our Robotics programme part of our curriculum for the P3 and P4 pupils. The programme aims to help our pupils develop their critical and inventive thinking skills. Pupils will be taught how to build and programme models and make them come “alive”. They will also learn programming concepts using visuals and a “drag and drop” block-based software. A separate note with more details of the programme will be sent out to P4 parents at a later date. This event is open to all parents of K2 children. The programme of our Open House will include visits to classroom lessons and a tour of the school facilities. We will also be showcasing the myriad of learning experiences at North View Primary to engage and develop our pupils holistically. P5 Learning Journey (LJ) to Yishun Park - Friday 20 May 2016 The LJ will be conducted during curriculum hours. The P5 pupils will go on a Nature Exploration at Yishun Park, to provide them with an authentic outdoor learning experience in Science concept, Diversity. The nature guides from our Science Club will be sharing interesting information on the flora and fauna found in Yishun Park to the P5 pupils. The LJ is also organized to commemorate Earth Day 2016 and to inculcate a sense of respect and responsibility towards nature in our pupils. P3 Conversational Chinese/Malay (CCM) Programme - Friday 20 May 2016 to Wednesday 25 May 2016 The school-based Conversational Chinese/Malay (CCM) Programme is an initiative by MOE to equip our pupils with conversational Chinese/Malay oral skills to allow them to communicate with their friends and neighbours of different races. P3 Chess Programme – Tuesday 24 May 2016 & Wednesday 25 May 2016 The P3 Chess programme aims to develop our pupils in their critical and metacognitive thinking through 6 hours of basic chess play. Apart from learning the rules of chess, pupils will learn to communicate, interact and reflect whilst playing the game with one another. P3 Social Studies Field-Based Lessons (FBL) to HDB Gallery – Tuesday 24 May 2016 and Wednesday 25 May 2016 For more than half a century, the Housing & Development Board (HDB) has been providing affordable homes of quality for Singaporeans. Our pupils will be visiting the HDB gallery to uncover Singapore’s public housing story through the multi-sensory and self-exploratory exhibits. P4 Aesthetics Learning Journey (LJ) to Victoria Concert Hall (VCH) – Wednesday 25 May 2016 The P4 students will be attending Victoria Concert Hall’s inaugural Open House for their Aesthetics Learning Journey. The objective of the LJ is to expose our pupils to the performing arts in a public performing venue. They will learn to appreciate the performing arts and the proper etiquette of watching performances. A separate note with more details of the LJ will be sent out to parents at a later date. P5 Social Studies Field-Based Lessons (FBL) to Asian Civilisation Museum (ACM) – Wednesday 25 May 2016 This trip to the ACM will provide opportunities for pupils to learn about the ancient civilisations in a fun and engaging environment. They will be able to interact closely with artefacts and discover how the legacies of ancient China and India influence our lives today. P6 Learning Journey (LJ) to Pasir Ris Park - Wednesday 25 May 2016 The LJ will be conducted during curriculum hours. The LJ will provide the P6 pupils with an authentic and experiential learning experience, making ecology topics in Science come alive, as the pupils make relevant observations and discoveries in the natural environment. Pupils also get to learn more about our local natural heritage and appreciate the diversity of mangrove flora and fauna. Games Carnival 2016 – Friday 27 May 2016 The annual Games Carnival will serve as a platform for our pupils to apply their skills and knowledge learnt from their PE lessons in a competitive environment. The games carnival will allow pupils to exemplify sportsmanship, to work together in games situation and strengthen teamwork and camaraderie among classmates.
