THE GLOBAL PLAN: WORKING TO IMPROVE WOMEN'S HEALTH AF-AIDS has launched a new report on the progress achieved to date through the Global Plan towards the elimination of new HIV infections among children by 2015 and keeping their mothers alive (Global Plan). Encouragingly, the report showed considerable progress on the goal of preventing new infections among children across many of the 21 Global Plan priority countries in Africa. COUNTING 9.6 BILLION HUMANS ON EARTH BY 2050 The current world population of 7.2 billion is projected to increase by 1 billion over the next 12 years and reach 9.6 billion by 2050, according to a report launched by DESA's Population Division in June. The report points out that growth will be mainly in developing countries, with more than half in Africa. WHO REPORT: VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AS A "GLOBAL HEALTH PROBLEM OF EPIDEMIC PROPORTIONS" A new report finds that physical or sexual violence is a public health problem that affects more than one third of all women globally. Global and regional estimates of violence against women: Prevalence and health effects of intimate partner violence and non-partner sexual violence, published by the World Health Organization in partnership with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC), represents the first systematic study of global data on the prevalence of violence against women - both by partners and non-partners.More information is available online.

WORLD HEPATITIS DAY 2013 - WHO URGES GOVERNMENTS TO ACT ON HEPATITIS THREAT On World Hepatitis Day (28 July), the World Health Organization (WHO) is urging governments to act against the five hepatitis viruses that can cause severe liver infections and lead to 1.4 million World Youth Foundation – Newsletter July2013

deaths every year. Some of these hepatitis viruses, most notably types B and C, can also lead to chronic and debilitating illnesses such as liver cancer and cirrhosis, in addition to loss of income and high medical expenses for hundreds of millions of people worldwide.
