About the Course Electromagnetics involves the study of macroscopic behavior of electric charges in vacuum and matter. Electromagnetic phenomena underlie the analysis and design of most of the electrical, electromechanical and electronic systems. The main idea of electromagnetism can be encapsulated in the famous Maxwell’s equations. These can be used to explain the properties of light, radio waves, the magnetic fields produced by brain activity and many other phenomena. Electromagnetics course is a prerequisite for various other courses like Antennas, RF communication, Satellite communication, Radar technologies, Electrical Machines, EMI/EMC etc. This course is aimed at providing both breadth and depth in understanding electromagnetic concepts and its applications.

Course Goals  



To provide the basic understanding of the concepts of electromagnetic fields with an emphasis on wave propagation. To provide an insight on electromagnetism and its practice in modern communications such as wireless, millimeter waves, optics etc. To provide an exposure to EMI/EMC.

Brief list of topics to be covered This course covers the fundamentals of electromagnetics by emphasizing physical understanding and practical applications in Electronics and communication Engineering. The brief list of topics to be covered are the study of static electric fields in vacuum and dielectrics, conductors, capacitance, electrostatic energy and forces, Poisson’s equation, static magnetic fields, Biot- Savart law, Ampere’s law, vector magnetic potential, inductance, Maxwell’s equations for time varying fields, Faraday’s law, plane wave propagation, time-harmonic fields, propagation in lossless media, wave reflection and transmission at normal incidence and EMI/EMC.
