Omical

is NOT a Calcium Supplement! It’s much, much more! Jimmy Gutman, MD

I know it sounds strange, but when I hear people referring to Omical as our “calcium supplement”, I get defensive. You cannot hold Omical next to any other calcium supplement in the pharmacy or health-food store and make any comparisons other than saying they both contain calcium –

What is in these other calcium products? There are several possibilities. The most common ingredients are salts of calcium, which include calcium carbonate, calcium gluconate, and others. Some sources include crushed up horse bones or even crushed up oyster shells, both of which carry potential contamination with toxic substances like lead or mercury. Some calcium is even dug up from the ground from mines in the form of dolomite. I guess if you stretch it, stuff that you dig up from the ground is natural, but clearly we need to look harder at the definition. The more elaborate ones may have some magnesium or even vitamin D added, but be ready to pay a premium for these.

Before we get into Omical, let’s discuss why we just can’t get our calcium from our foods. Ideally, this would be the best way to do it. We should be getting all of our nutritional requirements from our foods, but obviously this can be difficult. Medical practitioners who say you don’t really need to take vitamin pills if you are eating properly, may as well say that people needn’t wear seatbelts if we all drove properly. The truth is, the majority of us will benefit from supplementation, and this is why you see such a large section in the drug store selling calcium supplements. Most doctors by now are cognizant enough to have written many prescriptions for calcium.

Why is calcium supplementation so common? To start, the National Institute of Health (the U.S. department of health of human services) believes a huge percentage of Americans are not meeting currently recommended guidelines for optimal calcium intake. Clearly, many of us are just not getting enough. The time to take care of osteoporosis is when you are 30, not when you’re

70 years old and are scrambling to try and regain what you’ve already lost. Think of it like a registered retirement savings plan (RRSP), investing early has vastly better results than doing so later. And keep in mind, dietary calcium requirements on a per weight basis is highest in children and adolescents. Besides the obvious importance of calcium in the health of bones, teeth, and gums, calcium is involved with blood pressure control. Calcium is also critical for proper blood clotting, enzyme activation, nerve transmission, cholesterol regulation, hormone function and other important functions.

On a simple level, there is a very basic thing that Immunotec is always getting back to, which is enhance the natural way our bodies function. This is a calcium product that is derived from milk, the first and most natural source of calcium we receive in our lifetimes. Not only does this product fit in with what we’re trying to do at Immunotec, but it develops natural substances that truly have the edge on other supplements on the market, and stands up to the true scrutiny of science.

So what is so different about Omical? We could say that this is the way nature intended us to absorb calcium because milk is our first, our original source of calcium. Although true, some people may want to have a more scientific perspective. The most basic way to examine this is to look at the actual constituents of Omical. Omical is NOT a calcium supplement – it is a milk mineral complex. This complex involves many components including magnesium, vitamin D, phosphorus, potassium, iron, zinc, copper, and more (see figure 1). These minerals are precisely combined to reflect the make-up of human bone (see table 1). The important roles these other substances play are profound, only some of them are listed in the figure here.
