Terence Joseph The long-house church in Sarawak: a study of the rural Iban Methodist church in the New Federation of Malaysia Dallas: Southern Methodist University, 1964 This thesis is written from a Christian perspective and with one purpose in view, viz. , to study the background and growth of the Methodist church among the Ibans of Sarawak in the context of the political structure, economic factors, and social, cultural, and religious environments which form an integral part of the people's life. Present circumstances may yield either a stumbling block or a stepping stone for the Christian church in Sarawak as it moves toward spiritual growth, the self-affirmation of an indigenous life in a new nation, and the outreach of an autonomous church. The course of action which the church determines to follow will, to a large extent, determine the part it will play in the future of this young nation. In writing this thesis, the author intends not to enter into the polemics of the day, but to chart the background of the church in Sarawak and to examine the environment in which the Methodist Church there now lives and bears witness ... Sarawak faces a strategic juncture in its own history and development. Christians believe that history lies in the hands of God and that they, through the leading of the Holy Spirit, must be alert to the movements of history. It is from this perspective that the writer seeks to understand the rapid and amazing growth of the Iban church in Sarawak. -- Preface.
