TWO MODES o SURVIVAL MODE
o SIGNIFICANCE MODE
Three things about Strong people … 1) Identity - Jacob 2) Initiative - Jonathan 3) Inspiration - Joshua
2 Peter 1:2-4 (NKJV) 2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
Titus 1:2 (NKJV) “in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began” Hebrews 6:18 (NIV) “… it is impossible for God to lie …” 2 Corinthians 1:20 [NIV] “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen …”
During WWII General Creighton Abrams found himself and his troops surrounded on all sides. With characteristic optimism, he told his officers, “For the first time in the history of this campaign, we are now in a position to attack the enemy in any direction.”
Hebrews 6:12 (NKJV) that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. Hebrews 6:12 (NIV) We do not want you to become lazy, Hebrews 6:12 (AMP) that you may not grow disinterested and become [spiritual] sluggards…
Hebrews 6:12 (WEY) so that you may not become half-hearted,
Joshua 21:43-45 So the LORD gave Israel all the land he had sworn … The LORD gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn … Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel failed; every one was fulfilled. Joshua 23:14 … not one of all the good promises the LORD your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed.
You become sluggish, disinterested when …
1. There is lack of vision and expectation -Abraham generationally2. There you have a unhealthy Self image 3. There is a undealt negative past 4. There is emptiness
Inheriting the promises through …
① Favor ② Friend - associations
③ Fed up - desperation ④ Faith
Hebrews 4:2 (MSG) “We received the same promises as those people in the wilderness, but the promises didn’t do them a bit of good because they didn't receive the promises with faith.”
Psalm 103:5 (AMP) “Who satisfies your with good so that your youth, renewed, is like the eagle's [strong, overcoming, soaring]!”
Proverbs 28:2 (GN) “... A nation will be strong and endure when it has intelligent, sensible leaders.”
Life Giving thought
Nothing happens until someone provides leadership for it.
Three Key Leaders for Israel
MOSES He led Israel from Egypt thru Wilderness JOSHUA He led Israel from Wilderness to Promise land DAVID He led Israel from Promises Land to Mt. Zion
1 John 2:12-14 (KJV) 12 I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake. 13 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known Him who is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father. 14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
Three Phases of a Believer
1.Children 2.Young Men 3.Fathers
Joshua 1:1-2 (NKJV) 1 After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, it came to pass that the LORD spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' assistant, saying: 2 “Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them— the children of Israel.
Joshua 1:3-5 (NKJV) 3 Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses. 4 From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the River Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your territory. 5 No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you.
Joshua 1:6-7 (NKJV) 6 Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. 7 Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go.
Joshua 1:8-9 (NKJV) 8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."
In the Children stage … 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Bitter Waters at Marah (Exodus 15:23-26) Hunger (Exodus 16:1-18) (Numbers 11:4-35) Thirst (Exodus 17:1-7) Idolatry (Exodus 32) Willful disobedience in leaving manna until morning (Exodus 16:19-22) 6. Unthankful-ness - Complaining & Grumbling. 7. Gluttony (Psalm 78:18-32) 8. Criticism against leadership (Numbers 12:1-14) 9. Wanting a mediator Moses (Exodus 19) 10. Unbelief
Three Key Principles of Joshua 1
1. Embrace a New Season
“Moses My servant is dead” (1:2)
Hebrews 10:35-39 (MSG) 35 So don’t throw it all away now. You were sure of yourselves then. It’s still a sure thing! 36 But you need to stick it out, staying with God’s plan so you'll be there for the promised completion. 38 But anyone who is right with me thrives on loyal trust; if he cuts and runs, I won't be very happy. 39 But we’re not quitters who lose out. Oh, no! We’ll stay with it and survive, trusting all the way.
Daniel 2:20-21 (AMP) 20 Daniel answered, Blessed be the name of God forever and ever! For wisdom and might are His! 21 He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and sets up kings. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding!
Natural and Spiritual Seasons Similarities 1. Seasons End - No season lasts indefinitely. Spiritual seasons pass through our lives just as we experience the different seasons in nature. 2. Every season has it’s blessing and beauty - Winter has its’ blessing, and summer has it’s blessing.
Natural and Spiritual Seasons Differences 1. Length - Spiritual seasons have no definite duration. 2. Description - Spirituals seasons come in variety of shapes and sizes. 3. Dynamics - Spiritual seasons do not reoccur in regular cycles like the natural seasons do.
2. Embrace a New Warfare Strategy
Joshua 1:3-4 (NKJV) 3 Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses. 4 From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the River Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your territory.
“I will not drive them out from before thee in one year, lest the land become desolate and the beast of the field multiply against thee: by little and little I will drive them out from before thee, until thou be increased and inherit the land” (Exodus 23:20,30) “The Lord thy God is He which goeth over before thee: as a consuming fire He shall destroy them and He shall bring them down before thy face; so shalt thou drive them out and destroy them quickly” (Deuteronomy 9:3)
Numbers 33:50-56 (MSG) 51 Tell the People of Israel, When you cross the Jordan into the country of Canaan, 52 drive out the native population before you, destroy their carved idols, destroy their cast images, level their worship-mounds 53 so that you take over the land and make yourself at home in it; I’ve given it to you. It’s yours. 55 But if you don’t drive out the native population, everyone you let stay there will become a cinder in your eye and a splinter in your foot. They’ll give you endless trouble right in your own backyards. 56 And I’ll start treating you the way I planned to treat them.”
1. Canaanites: dwellers of the low land = negative pessimists,
2. Hittites: the violent ones = tongue problems 3. Hivites: compromisers, double-minded, unstable 4. Perezzites: independent spirit, doing their own thing
5. Girgashites: dwell in clay soil = surface people, slippery 6. Amorites: stubborn, unteachable and unadjustable 7. Jebusites: depressed, discouraged, discord
3. Embrace a New Strength
“Be strong and courageous” “Strong” -- Chazaq -to lay hold of, to seize, to get a grip on something
“Courageous” -- Ammits -to keep a firm grip, not to go flabby or weak, to grow stronger, to be bold, alert
① Lay hold of God’s Prophetic Words “Be strong and of good courage for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.” (1:6)
② Lay hold of God’s Pattern of Doing Things “Be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to the law which Moses My servant commanded you.” (1:7) Sword no longer in the Hand, but in the Mouth!
Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Revelations 1:16 “And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp two-edged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength”
The phrase “two-edged” is taken from the Greek word ‘distomos’. This word also is a compound word made up of the ‘di’, which means ‘two’, and the word ‘stomos’, which is the Greek word for one’s mouth.
③ Lay hold of God’s Presence & Partnership “Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (1:9)
Hebrews 13:5 (AMP) 5 Let your character or moral disposition be free from love of money [including greed, lust, and craving for earthly possessions] and be satisfied with your present [circumstances and with what you have]; for [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down (relax My hold on you)! [Assuredly not!]
Hebrews 13:6 (AMP) 6 So we take comfort and are encouraged and confidently and boldly say, “The Lord is my Helper; I will not be seized with alarm [I will not fear or dread or be terrified]. What can man do to me?
